One Way Or Another

Tom Biddulph, Amsterdam/UK

In Ralph Bunch’s 1950 Nobel Peace Prize lecture, he said:

‘‘The road to peace can never be traversed by threatening to fight at every bend’’

Through the visual language of the everyday, the artist surprises the audience by creating a message of hope out of ordinary materials.

Don’t give up on future generations.

Work together, keep the faith.

One way or another, hazards ahead can be overcome.

You can’t stop hope.

A set of revised road signs giving humanity a shared direction for the future.

One Way or Another was created by Tom Biddulph and co-commissioned by Wigan Council, Lightpool, and Light Up Lancaster.

Born in Manchester, England, now lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands. A consecutive string of installations for the Amsterdam Light Festival led to establishing his artistic practice, initially focussing on light works but now expanding to include photography, textiles and video works. Tom has always has been fascinated by language and how it shows up in the physical world. His installations often make use of familiar everyday items, using them as a vehicle to convey a deeper message.

Recent projects include a fourth commission for the Amsterdam Light Festival, an exhibition at A Flag Gallery in Amsterdam, and a commission for a public park in Wigan, UK.
